Congratulations to our 2007
Environmental Stewardship Award recipients!
Monday, April 23 was the School of the
Environment's 2007 Earth Day Faculty Reception. With the over 150 SOE
faculty members spread throughout the various departments and campuses, the
reception was a wonderful opportunity for the members to meet each other,
learn about new areas of research, form potential partnerships, and just
relax.
As part of the annual event, as well as the recognition that caring for the
Earth is a year round endeavor, SOE has been pleased to present the
Environmental Stewardship awards since 1998. The awards recognize a
student and/or student group, staff member, and faculty member who have
demonstrated a high standard of stewardship of the USC environment.
Each year the number of nominations increases and the selection of a winner
among the many qualified nominees becomes more difficult. We credit
this not only to the personal attributes of the individuals nominated, but
in some cases we believe it may stem from the institutionalization of the
policies and practices advocated campus-wide by the President's
Environmental Advisory committee, the Sustainable Universities Initiative
and the School of the Environment. This year's recipients of the
Environmental Stewardship awards are:
Environmental Stewardship Award for Faculty:
Liv Haselbach, Civil & Environmental Engineering
Environmental Stewardship Award for Staff:
Teresa Donelan, Baruch Institute
Environmental Stewardship Award for Student Groups:
PAWS, USC Sumter
Environmental Stewardship Award for Students:
Laura Sima

Outstanding Student Awards
Each year, the School of the Environment recognizes a top
graduate student in the MEERM program at Graduate Student Award Day.
This year we divided the Outstanding MEERM Student award which allowed us to
recognize our JD-MEERM students with a separate award. The recipients
are selected based on academic record and faculty recommendation, and
receive a plaque and financial award. This year's recipients are:
Outstanding MEERM Student: Audrey Bales Britton
Outstanding JD-MEERM Student: Julie Murphy
The SOE also recognizes a top student in our
Environmental Studies Minor program at the USC Awards Day each year.
The recipient is chosen based on academic record and faculty recommendation.
We are delighted to offer this year's recipient not only a plaque, but a
financial award as well.
